A Brief History of

“Hear to Go!”

Hear to Go! was the first Rave Production Company in Pittsburgh PA, and one of the first in the USA. It was mainly myself and Controlled Weirdness (a.k.a. Neil Keating), but a there were a few people that helped out quite a bit: Greg Roman and Joe Ortley were “M.C. Hydroponic and Fearless Leader” (the Hydroponic M.C.s), Amy Novelli and Donna (last name escapes me) were the “Flaming Red Out of Control Sisters” (they both have red hair), and the Distant Mountain Climbers (a guy named Rick (last name escapes me). Anyone that wanted to do anything was welcome to join in though, so there are a lot of people who made significant contributions that will have to be mentioned at a later date when time and my memory allows me to put it all in sequential order. Any one who was there at the time, be sure to contact me so I can start compiling the data. There is more to this history than what is represented here, because most of the info was compiled from stuff I dug up whilst rummaging through my old bedroom in my parents’ house.

The first thing you will notice about HTG was how unbelievably low-fi the operation was. Quite frankly, Pittsburgh was not the epicenter of Western Civilizatin circa 1991 A.D. so we had to make do with the materials on hand. However, that did not stop us from thinking big, or talking it! You will read some now absolutely ridiculous sounding claims from HTG, specifically in the press release and flyers. Not that we did not believe it at the time, it just seems funny considering how far raving has come in America since then. Anyway, I hope you enjoy this little slice of Rave History...

Psychotronic Slack-Rave

This was Pittsburgh’s first Rave. Sponsored by the newly opened “Slacker” and attended by somewhere between 800 and 1000 people. This would become the Birthday for the Pittsburgh Rave Scene.

Schizophrenic New Year Psycho-Rave

Moving quickly, we organized the next event at the now also legendary Oakland Beehive Coffee House and Movie Theater, which had just recently opened. This event was mainly interesting after the fact, as many family members of schizophrenics in the Pittsburgh area wrote letters threatening to boycott the establishment entirely because of the name of the party.

Jan. 31,1992

All Night Mind Expansion

It was either this party or“Alphabet Sex Soup” That was the last party at the Beehive. The last one just rocked! People were just going Mental, the Projectionist was doing all sort of crazy film loops, it was the best Beehive party. Unfortunately, it was so fun, that Beehive figured if this kept going, they would be raided or the place would burn down. Oh well.

Mojo Mind-Rave

(in New Orleans, 1st ever Mardi-Gras rave)

Yep. This was the first Rave ever during Mardi-Gras. It might have been the first Rave in New Orleans, but I think one party beat us to that claim, but I am not entirely sure. Anyway, this was a good time, though we didn’t make the fortune we were after. We had to split town shortly after the party because we didn’t bribe the cops enough money. They were pissed.

100% Lets Go Fuckin’ Mental

I will always remember this event as the beginning of the end of HTG. As our steam was running out, we ended up playing for a then severly junked-out bar promoter, at this little bar on the South Side called “Ronnie P’s”. It was a sad parody on what we had intended to do in the first place. The End was Nigh. HTG’s last party though would be May Day 1992, in New Orleans.

Clash of the Cosmic Robots

This was an ambitious project taht just fell apart because the owner of the building got cold feet. Read the flyer for a laugh, it would have been a great party! Click on the pics for a bigger image.

Colour the Cosmic Robot Contest Winner:

Despite the fact the party never actually happened, we did get one entry in our coloring contest, and what an entry it was! It is my feeling that even if we got more entries, this one would have won anyway. The winner was only identified as “Cramp” from the raver-famous Chesterfield Rd. in the Oakland section of Pittsburgh. We never sent Cramp his/ her prize, as the whole affair was a disaster. But Cramp... if you are out there get back in touch with me so I can finally send you your promised prizes: One pack of Non-Generic filtered cigarettes, a 12 oz. soft drink and a pair of tickets, I guess to the movies or something, as it doesn’t look like a make-up party is anywhere scheduled in the near future. E-mail me! buda@deadlybuda.com

By the way, for those of you thinking this is an easy way to get a free pack of smokes, you will subjected to a rigourous “Hear to Go” History exam, so don’t even try to front!

Check out the rad envelope it was sent in below!

HTG Press

The original HTG Press Release in all it’s glory.

HEAR TO GO! is the vanguard of Rave Culture in Western Pennsylvania. “Rave” is a growing international movement centered around Disc Jockeys synthesizing, altering, and mixing a variety of musical sources in order to create original, spontaneous, and inspirational dance music. By combining the electronic wizardry of the rave DJs with the creations and installations of artists familiar with a variety of media, HEAR TO GO! assembles quality multi-media experiences on the cutting edge of entertainment.

HEAR TO GO! raves unfold possibilities of sight, sound and dimension. Electrifying the environment is sound. Rhythmic, bassy, and electronic, the music is designed specifically to inspire people to move. The majority of people at the “rave” will be dancing as soon as the doors open (usually around 11pm) to well past 5 in the morning. The HEAR TO GO! DJ’s, known for their intense musical selection and experimental mixing techniques, pride themselves in showcasing and creating songs and sounds that are the future of dance music.

The visual environment is also a key element to a HEAR TO GO! rave. Artist, sculptors, projectionists, filmmakers, and video editors are all involved in making sure every rave has it’s own unique look and feel. A rave in the old King’s Court Theatre in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania had two movie projectors blending and flowing images in and out of one another, seemingly floating through a haze of smoke and pulsating lighting effects.

To compliment this environment, space is set aside where sound is at a minimum. One can relax, talk comfortably and perhaps sip on a “smart drink” (a vitamin-packed refreshment).

The raves also act as a forum for new talent an& technology. At the “Mojo Mind Rave” in New Orleans, Louisiana, the percussion band Floater performed along with local poets reading their original works. Meanwhile, video artists showcased a movable, multi-screen video display of their own creation.

HEAR TO GO! combines the talents of creative groups and people in consistently new and interesting ways. By providing an environment that encourages involvement and participation , HEAR TO GO! is transforming dreams of the future into present day reality.

Hear to Go! Generated a fair amount of press mentions, blurb, listings. I had originally saved most of that info on xerox copies cut out. It was a little to sloppy to perform OCR on, and I haven’t had time to type it all in. For the moment the best there is is just clicking on the scans. You might find some useful info if you squint. For the most part the blurbs just hype the event, maybe a brief mention, etc. This would probably only be interesting to real anal rave history freaks.
